Fuel Tax Tips
The IFTA agreement states that you will pay the taxes the state charges at the pump on any mileage run in that state even if you did not purchase fuel there. That doesn't mean you must purchase fuel in each state you just need to purchase wisely.
Buying fuel in a "cheaper" state, like GA, OK or WY does not mean that you are saving money. If the fuel tax rate is cheaper then it takes more gallons to make up the difference in a more expensive state. This is called Fuel Tax Equalization. Evilsizor Transportation Services will guide you in deciding which states would be in your best interest to purchase fuel. You can buy the cheapest fuel along the way but you will be paying more at the end of the quarter on your IFTA report. It is important that you retain all of your fuel receipts, so that you can prove when, where and how much fuel you purchased during any given tax period. It is also important that you retain all of your trip sheets (mileage records for each state). Click here to download a blank trip sheet for your use.
