Here's a basic, quick checklist for new motor carriers along with some helpful links.  

1.  FMCSA/USDOT Authority

     Insurance 

Common Carriers: BMC91x AND BMC34 

Contract Carriers: BMC91x

Brokers: Surety Bond or Trust Fund (BMC 84 or 85)

     BOC-3

2.  Intrastate Authority - check with your base state

3.  UCR - visit www.ucr.in.gov for further assistance

4.  IFTA - International Fuel Tax Agreement (click on One Stop Shop and select your base state) - required for vehicles over 26,000#s

5.  Mileage Tax Accounts

            New Mexico WDT - required for vehicles over 26,000#s

            Kentucky KYU - required for vehicles over 59,999#s

            New York HUT - required for vehicles over 17,000#s (select TMT-1)

            Oregon PUC - Expensive State!  Only purchase if going through state   regularly, otherwise stop at the port of entry and purchase a temporary pass to avoid quarterly/monthly tax filings.

6.  Be sure each driver completes a log book daily then audit periodically.

7.  Complete a trip sheet during each trip for fuel tax purposes.

8.  Set up your drug testing program or join a consortium.
